    Estimating block & fill

Understand quantity references and the information needed for a reliable takeoff.

    Start with net wall area

For an 8 × 16-inch face module, one square foot of wall represents 1.125 modules (often rounded to 1.13). Start with wall length × height, then account for openings, corners, specialty shapes and a project-appropriate allowance. This is a planning relationship, not a final order quantity.

    Core-fill reference volumes

These historical reference volumes are approximate. Core geometry, reinforcement, solid portions and the selected unit affect actual grout requirements. Confirm the unit and approved grout specification before estimating an order.

Nominal unitCoresReference cubic feet per unit
    6 × 8 × 1620.17
    8 × 8 × 1620.25
    8 × 8 × 1630.22
    10 × 8 × 1620.33
    12 × 8 × 1620.39

    Converting volume

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. As an arithmetic example only, 5,000 units at 0.25 cubic feet each gives 1,250 cubic feet, or approximately 46.30 cubic yards before project allowances. Confirm the actual fill volume instead of treating this example as a mix order.

    Lintels and bond beams

Fill volume depends on the channel and shape. The reference sketches show approximate volumes per linear foot for the illustrated profiles. Match the complete drawing and obtain current unit information before using a value.

    Mortar quantities need confirmation

The supplied estimating references disagree on cement-bag and sand quantities for several block sizes. A single automated calculator would conceal that difference. Krebs can help confirm a takeoff for the chosen unit, joint, mortar product and laying method.

For a useful estimate, bring wall dimensions, openings, block sizes, finish requirements, reinforced cells, lintel lengths and the specified mortar and grout.
